HOUSTON (KIAH) — Lakewood Church members, parents and children frantically rushed out of the afternoon Spanish service yesterday when shots were fired. Police confirmed that three were shot including the shooter, the five- year-old and a man was shot in the leg.
Both adults and children spoke out about the scare yesterday concerning the moments after the shooting happened. Nine-year-old Ethan Rodriguez was told to stay hidden in a bathroom with his dance class while his teacher barricaded the door with a box cutter. Another member said that all she saw were members running in a panic.
The children that hid were escorted by police back to their families when it was safe. There was also a family reunification next door at the Lifetime Fitness.
Pastor Joel Osteen said in a statement on X that he was grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement to stop the shooter. “In the face of such darkness, we must hold onto our faith and remember evil will not prevail. God will guide us through the darkest of times,” Osteen said.
“Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.”
