HOUSTON (KIAH) — The Harris County Sherrif’s Office released body camera video from a shooting that left a woman hospitalized after she was mistaken as an intruder.
This happened Saturday, Feb. 3 just a little after 2 a.m. at the Pines of Woodforest apartment complex located at 90 Uvalde Road.
Harris County Deputies were sent to the area after a woman called and said someone was breaking into her home. When deputies arrived, they checked out the apartment, but no intruder was found according to the HCSO.
After the search for the burglary call ended, the Sheriff’s office said a neighbor flagged down deputies and told them that someone was breaking into a unit nearby on the second floor.
In the body camera video, two female deputies were seen knocking on the door of the northeast Apartment Complex with guns drawn announcing themselves. Deputies also observed a front window was broken and the screen was removed.
HCSO said the deputies saw a woman come to the door with a gun and that’s when she was shot at 17 times. The woman was hit by several of those bullets and was taken to the hospital. She is expected to survive her injures.
The Harris County Sherrif’s Office said the woman who was shot was visiting her friend at the apartment complex. The two had locked themselves out of the apartment and had to break a window to get inside, according to authorities.
After the incident, deputies were told the woman came to the door with the gun for safety reasons. The victim has since retained popular civil rights attorney Ben Crump, and many are now criticizing how the deputies responded to the shooting.
The HCSO’s homicide division is investigating the shooting, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting an independent investigation which is standard when a deputy uses potentially deadly force.
