CHICAGO — Scuba divers with the Chicago Police Marine Unit took advantage of the mild winter temperatures on Saturday when they hit the water for an unusual rescue.
According to CPD, the marine unit was able to help out a Groupon employee whose drone ended up in some deep water.
While capturing video of the company’s new office location along West Wacker Drive, the employee troubled the waters when they accidentally submerged their drone into the Chicago River.
While there isn’t a “water rescue” category offered by Groupon, the employee still got a great deal when the CPD Marine Unit used the opportunity for a training dive.
According to CPD, the scuba divers performed an underwater search pattern and were able to successfully retrieve the lost drone.
In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, the marine unit said it was a great opportunity to sharpen the diver’s skills in recovering small objects from the bottom of the river.
The device appears to be a DJI Mavic 2 Pro, which is not waterproof, according to the manufacturer’s website. So while the employee may have lost the footage, they at least got a neat story that can’t be as easily erased.
