Mentor honors duo, keeps within a game of Brunswick after 91-79 win vs. Cleveland Heights: Boys basketball scoreboard & standouts

  • by

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Mentor coach Bob Krizancic presented seniors Matthew Biddell and Ian Ioppolo with basketballs to commemorate each reaching 1,000 career points earlier this season.

Then, they continued their scoring pace with Ioppolo providing a game-high 37 points in a 91-79 win Friday night against Cleveland Heights.

The big game by Ioppolo, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, overshadowed a 31-point night by Cleveland Heights senior guard Mike Lewandowski. Ioppolo added eight rebounds, while Biddell provided 21 points and eight assists for Mentor (11-6), which is ranked 11th in the cleveland.com boys basketball Top 25.

The Cardinals improved to 8-2 in the Greater Cleveland Conference, just behind GCC-leading Brunswick, which has just one conference loss to Strongsville. The Blue Devils are idle this week and meet the Mustangs again on Tuesday next week.

If both Mentor and Brunswick can keep their pace in the conference for the final two weeks of the regular season, they will meet Feb. 23 in Mentor for a share or outright conference title.

Against No. 18 Cleveland Heights (11-9), the Cardinals slowly built their lead with a 27-21 run in the second quarter after a 20-all tie score. Jay’Quan Stubbs added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, while Kobe Frasure-Azzano gave Mentor 11 points.
