Authorities seek to identify 3 involved in robbery on Red Line train


CHICAGO — Detectives are asking for help as they seek to identify three people who robbed and attacked a man on a CTA Red Line train last week. 

According to mass transit detectives, it happened just after noon on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Authorities say the robbery unfolded on a train, but the subsequent attack spilled out onto the platform of the 47th Street Red Line stop.

Detectives say the victim was sitting on the train when he was approached by the three individuals who forcefully grabbed his cell phone from his hand. The victim attempted to get his phone back but was then attacked by the group. 

Authorities say the victim attempted to flee from the train car when it stopped at 47th Street station, but the group followed him out and the attack continued on the platform.

The group then fled eastbound on 47th Street from the station. 

Detectives say the victim suffered minor injuries during the robbery, but it is unclear if he was able to get his phone back.  

Mass transit detectives provided the following descriptions of the three individuals who are believed to have been involved in the robberies:

  • An individual between 16 and 18 years of age, who stands between 5-foot-9 and 6 feet tall and weighs between 150 and 170 pounds. He was spotted wearing a burgundy or red-colored hooded sweatshirt with dark jeans.
  • An individual between 16 and 18 years of age, who stands between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, and weighs between 150 and 170 pounds. He was spotted wearing a red-colored hooded sweatshirt, a navy blue coat with a tan fur collar, tan pants and green shoes with white soles.
  • An individual between 16 and 18 years of age, who stands between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 and weighs between 150 and 170 pounds. He was spotted wearing a red colored hooded sweatshirt, a blue puffy jacket with dark jeans and a dark Nike backpack

Detectives provided photos of the three individuals captured by CTA security cameras on Wednesday.

Police advise the public to remain aware of their surroundings and stay free from distractions. According to officers, anyone who is confronted by an assailant should try to remain calm.

Authorities warn the public never to pursue a fleeing assailant and instead work to remember any unique physical characteristics of the offenders. 

Police say those who fall victim or witness a crime should call 911 immediately and provide authorities with a detailed description of the offenders.
